Maple Ridge isn’t as automatically slotted into the tourism destination category of cities in BC as central Vancouver is, however, I found that it has lots to offer! The city of Maple ridge seems to be full of life with ample transit lines, multiple shopping malls as well as parks close by to explore. All of the essentials are a short jaunt away.
If you are visiting Maple Ridge from Vancouver, the most cost-efficient way to get there is by the West Coast Express train from Waterfront Station. This train ride is more impressive than your typical skytrain commute as it has two-floors, washrooms on board, and provides tables between seats for passengers’ use.
It isn’t luxurious by international train standards, but if you aren’t used to traveling by rail it is a fun experience all on its own. This train will take you all the way to Mission City, but the stop I recommend you get off at to see parts of Maple ridge would be Port Haney. From there it is a short walk to the nearest shopping mall where you can take selfies with the famous Stuart Little (When you go you’ll know) and plan your next move. Bus ride? Taxi? Shopping? The world’s your oyster.
The journey was simultaneously thrilling and relaxing.
My experience traversing Maple Ridge is admittedly limited, however, I was able to take in the beauty of Kanaka Creek during my short stay. I am not sure how well-known this creek is to the general public, other than the fact that I myself had never heard of it.
Despite this fact, it did not disappoint in the slightest and should be added to must-see places in everyone’s local travel lists. The pandemic made it very difficult to travel too far from home, but thankfully with the discovery of local gems like Kanaka Creek, you can feel a world away while still staying local! #staycovidsafe

If you’re an adventurous spirit, you will adore Kanaka Creek. It is easily accessible via multiple road entrances, and there is a moderately large parking lot available for vehicles. The creek is hidden through a short but scenic walk through the forest, with bridges peppered throughout the route.
It quickly expands into gorgeous and powerful cliff falls, which extend into a deep ravine decorated by rockface and tall trees. The sight immediately brought Poccahauntus to mind…and an earworm of “just around the river bend…“. It truly is a stunning display of nature that seems to be straight out of a Disney movie!
The trails only have partial sections of incline making for a doable hike for most, and the surrounding forest is engulfed by moss and ferns. There are photo opt spots along the way that will have you feeling as though you’ve stepped foot onto Ewok territory.
Just when you may think the trails have ended, there will be more to see. There are well-kept picnic tables near the main lookout points of the waterfall and lots of green space for outdoor activities. There are public pit-style washrooms available too for anyone visiting further from home.
If you’re concerned with waste management during your visit, have no fear! This park is well equipped with comprehensive garbage disposal bins. There is even a separate bin designated for dog droppings! If you do bring your furry friend with you, make sure to bring a long leash as dogs must be kept on a leash in this park.
Additionally, it’s a peaceful and beautiful spot to take loved ones of all shapes and sizes, without the sometimes crowded aspect of different dog parks.
All in all, Kanaka Creek is sure to win you over. A photography goldmine with spectacular displays of nature and fresh air away from the city, without being too far ^_^ A great place for photos, my immortalized self is freeze-framed jumping in High School Musical style on one of the many bridges above the falls.
