Hidden in the beautiful Howe Sound of British Columbia sits a lesser-known island, Gambier. This sweet gem is tucked between Bowen Island (off the coast of West Vancouver) and Langdale (Sunshine Coast). It is a tiny island that is residential with no stores! However, there are a few local businesses that should consider adding themselves to Google Maps, such as a cinnamon bun stand.
Despite not having any official shops, this island is arguably still a must-see destination! The views of Gambier Harbour will leave you breathless, and wondering if you’ve entered Switzerland or if you’re still in BC? Seriously, the snow-peaked mountains have never looked more crisp or magical than when seen from the special vantage point of Gambier Harbour.

From here, you can also watch as BC Ferries make their commute to Langdale from Horseshoe Bay and vice versa. There is also a little park on the island (very little, but nice ^_^) called Avavets Park which is near Gambier Harbour and the Gambier Island Market Society.
Lots of wilderness to be explored on this island, along with a provincial park and picturesque vantage points at every turn! It makes for a sweet day trip for avid hikers or nature enthusiasts. Locals must love to be situated in this sanctuary of an island, while still being very close to amenities in the town of Gibsons or HorseshoeBay.
The island is roughly a 10min passenger boat ride away from the Langdale ferry terminal (Note: NO VEHICLES on this route). There is a schedule that can be found on the BC Ferries website, along with fare information.
One way is $6.00 per person, $12.00 there and back. Tickets can be purchased on board, but cash only, so be sure to visit an ATM before heading over! The BC Ferry terminal at Langdale sells packets of 10 tickets if you’re wanting to make an advance purchase. And in case you were wondering, no you can’t bring your chainsaw with you. **See picture below!
As you have probably noticed, we were able to visit Gambier during the Christmas season, and it gave us some pretty amazing memories. The ride there and back is an experience all on its own! BC sure is beautiful, I hope you’re able to visit this small part of it someday.
